About Building Community
Building Community is an online showcase featuring real-time practice from partnerships comprising councils and communities that are in the process of transferring land or buildings into community asset ownership. The Building Community films are made in conjunction with the Asset Transfer Unit.
The Asset Transfer Unit is led and managed by the Development Trusts Association - the UK’s leading network of community enterprise practitioners - in association with Community Matters and the Local Government Association. It is funded by Communities and Local Government.
The videos and articles document the process from the perspective of both the community organisations and the councils, these involve insights into a wide range of challenges that arise including: organising events and sourcing funding streams for renovating or refurbishing the building or land asset; forming relationships between the community, public and private sectors to facilitate progress; working with the local community to ensure that their needs are met as services are developed; raising local awareness and attracting new volunteers; raising finance through community enterprise and working towards sustainability; forming Community Land Trusts; finding ways to create affordable housing schemes; saving and transforming derelict or at-risk council-owned buildings and land into vibrant spaces owned and run by the community.
